Mediation

Student Legal Services also provides a mediation service for WVU students. This service provides disputants with a neutral third party, a mediator, to help resolve disputes in a reasonable manner. Students who are interested in student mediation should contact our office.

After reviewing the information below, students interested in mediation by Student Legal Services will need to complete the Application for Mediation.

What is mediation?

Mediation is a voluntary settlement process in which a neutral third party, called a mediator, guides the disputants to a reasonable resolution of their dispute by helping them:

  • Focus on their needs
  • Explore alternatives
  • Resolve legal issues
  • Negotiate agreements
  • Prepare for the future

What are the advantages of mediation?

When mediation is successful, everyone feels good about the outcome. In mediation:

  • Everything is confidential
  • You save time and money (mediation is free to all eligible WVU students)
  • You make the decisions that will affect your life
  • Everyone walks away a winner 
  • It helps build relationships

What types of disputes can be mediated?

Any dispute can be resolved through mediation. Mediation has been successful in settling disputes with:

  • Neighbors or roommates
  • Landlords
  • Family members
  • Merchants and businesses
  • Many others
